Selecting the Right Coffee Roasting Equipment

If you’re serious about roasting coffee, it’s best to invest in your own home-roasting equipment. But before you do that, it’s important to think about how much you’ll be roasting and how often. There are several factors to consider when choosing the right roasting equipment for your needs:

What Kind of Roast?

There are four main roasts:

  • City – the lightest roast, it has a yellowish color and tastes fresh. This is the most common type of coffee sold in grocery stores.
  • Full City – medium-roast beans have a brownish hue and are slightly more bitter than city roast beans, but not as strong as French or Italian roasts. They’re also called “American” roasts because they were popularized by American companies like Starbucks.
  • French – dark brownish black with an oily sheen on its surface; this is the darkest roast available today (and it’s also called European). French roasts will give you more caffeine per cup than any other type of bean because they retain more oils from within their shells than other types do; however, if you don’t like bitterness then stick with something lighter!

How Many Beans Do You Have?

If you’re planning to roast large amounts of beans, you’ll want to make sure that your equipment can handle it.

If you’re looking to roast 100 grams (3 1/2 ounces) at a time, then a home roaster like the Fresh Roast or Fresh Roast 2 will work well for you. If your goal is larger batches, say 500 grams (1 pound), then an industrial-grade drum roaster would be more appropriate.

How Often Will You Be Roasting?

If you roast frequently, such as every week or even every day, then it’s important to choose a machine that is easy to use and clean. This means finding a roaster that has removable parts for easy cleanup. It also means paying attention to things like handle design and material (you’ll want something sturdy).

For infrequent roasters who plan on roasting once in a while (maybe just once per month), durability becomes more important than ease of use or cleaning. You might find yourself spending more time maintaining your equipment than actually enjoying the coffee itself!

Do You Have Space for Home-Right Roasting Equipment?

When you’re selecting your home’s right roasting equipment, the first thing to consider is how much space you have available. If you live in a small apartment or condo and don’t have room for any new appliances, then this might not be the right hobby for you.

If your kitchen is already crowded with appliances and other items that take up countertop space, finding a place to store the roaster may be challenging. For example: if all of the cabinets are full and there aren’t any extra shelves above them (which are often used for storing pots), then there won’t be anywhere else for the roaster except on top of one of those cabinets–which means it would probably get dusty over time because nobody cleans behind their kitchen stuff! And even if there was enough room under one of those cabinets where no one would see it anyway…well…it still wouldn’t be very sanitary!

If, however, all your roasting will be done for personal use and at home, then there are other factors that need to be taken into account when determining which equipment works best for your needs. For example:

  • How often do I want/need fresh coffee? Do I want one roast per week or every two weeks? Am I willing or able to store extra beans between batches? These questions will help determine how much space is needed for storage as well as how often new batches need to be made with freshly roasted beans.* What kind of space am I working with? Do I have room along my kitchen countertop where this can sit without taking up too much room; does it need its own dedicated corner somewhere else in my house; could my family use this extra cabinet space instead since they’re usually making their own food anyway so maybe sharing would work better because then everyone gets what they want (and no one has any reason not share).
